No one's holding a gun to your head.
No one, that is, except you.
Release the tension on the gun-arm,
allow your fingers to feel like water.
Breathe.
Breathe again.
'Come back to your happy place.'
Breathe.
Walk.
Walk to your happy place.
So you said, 'by my twenty-fifth birthday...'
That,
that is a heavy gun.
Let the gun-arm rest.
Twenty-five is not a date-
maybe you turned twenty-five early;
on the day you first felt competent at your job.
Twenty-five is not a time-
maybe you'll turn twenty-five late;
when you (finally) no longer cling to some childish need
to make you 'happy'
and find it instead
in the happiness of the ones you love.
Twenty-five is a mindscape-
when you no longer wish for the comforts you grew up with
and call out to the challenges you want to grow into.
Twenty-five is a mood-
when you don't sulk at what is,
but rejoice in the things that you already have.
Maybe twenty-five is...
No,
Twenty-five is
happiness in sufficiency,
gratitude for comfort,
appreciation of love.
Twenty-five is
lovely.
1. My life's journey
2. The people I've been born to and have met
3. The places I've been to
4. The things I've learned
5. The realisations I've had
6. The books I've read
7. The work I do
8. The people that create the opportunities for me to do the work I do
9. Electricity, hot-water, a bed, lovely food, WiFi...
10. My brain that works like I want it to
11. My body that works well and looks wonderful
12. The opportunity to choose my legacy
13. The opportunity to choose
14. That the sun is not too hot and wind is not too chilly
15. Not needing to trudge up mountains with unimaginable weights strapped to my back
16. Sanitation
17. The right to speak and the tolerance of those who have to hear me
18. The ability to smile
19. That I have an art
20. That I live in this time, this city, this reality
21. The love I receive everyday
22. The changes in my life I had the opportunity to make
23. The genes and idiosyncracies I received
24. The real-life opportunities I've had to develop skills
25. The mindfulness to remember these twenty-five things that I am grateful for
Twenty-five.
Not so daunting now.
